Friendly Competition Encourages Farmers to Go Green

Boston, MA—This summer marks the start of The Green Life’s First Annual Farm Photo Contest. In the interest of supporting local agriculture and organic farming, The Green Life Online encouraged farmers to apply and contacted more than 500 farmers to submit their favorite farm photos. Between the four categories — Farm Life, Produce, Livestock and Landscape – The Green Life has already received over 50 submissions. The photo finalists, as selected by The Green Life, will be posted to their facebook page for final voting.

“Ultimately, we’re hoping to encourage farmers to make environmentally sustainable choices—and we don’t mind having a little fun in the process!” said Jeff Gang, coordinator of The Green Life. “Reviewing all of the entries has been really exciting”, said Hope Schaitkin, intern at The Green Life. “People are very enthusiastic about sharing their efforts with others, and the pictures are fantastic!”

The contest is open to submission until 11PM ET on July 4th, 2012. “We’re so happy with all of these submissions. But if you haven’t entered yet, there’s still a little bit of time,” said Gang.

Included with a photo submission was one farmer’s story about going green:

“We bed our grow-beds with a topped, sustainable, organic matter…using only products from our home-farm. We use the livestock bedding, and organic matter (manure from heritage-breeds of 100% grass-fed cattle, sheep, chickens, hogs, turkeys, ducks, and game birds). We then add our home grown earthworms….The moisture retention is superb, and the crops have been thriving all season, without pesticides, herbicides or even certified organic approved sprays.”

In return for sharing stories and photos, photo contest contestants compete for a variety of prizes. The winner of each category will receive a prize (valued at $25 or more) from Brookline Booksmith, Back to the Roots, or Savorii. The winners will also be promoted to The Green Life’s facebook page and list of subscribers.

“This contest is a first step in highlighting the good work farmers have done by going green” says Schaitkin. “Part of initiating real change is rewarding those who did the right thing, and what better way to do it then through some friendly and fun competition?”
